Twenty-eight-year-old Dim Sang is a Village Development Committee member who lives with her husband Kong Sambath and their seven month old daughter in Choam Ksant village of Preah Vihear province in northern Cambodia. Sang is also considered to be a model mother in her village following her education and training about maternal and child health care and nutrition so that she can educate other mothers in their village. When talking recently with a CWS team member, Sang said, “My daughter is chubby, active and never gets sick, for which I am happy.” She went on to say that she was sure this was partly because she used the information and knowledge she gained in her work with CWS – first for her own child: exclusive breast feeding for six months followed by adding supplementary nutrient-rich porridge, which she learned about from CWS staff, from seven months on.
By joining CWS healthy cooking and feeding sessions and then using the recipes to cook at home, Sang felt sure she helped her daughter thrive. She noted, too, that taking her daughter to the local health post for vaccinations as scheduled helped her feel she was doing all she could to ensure her child’s health. Sang added, “Now, 16 other mothers in our village are following my lead and their children are growing up healthy and happy, too, which makes me proud.”
