Celebrate Safe Schools and Safe Communities project partnership

CWS Indonesia | September 9, 2016

To celebrate our Safe Schools and Safe Communities project partnership with Act for Peace and local government duty bearers, CWS team members recently joined students, parents and teachers for an exhibition showcasing activities at the 15 primary schools that are part of the initiative in the Tana Toraja district of South Sulawesi in central Indonesia. In addition to a photo exhibit of project activities, the celebration, which hosted 1,070 students and adults during its five days, featured information and a demonstration about the importance of proper hand-washing with soap. Separately, there were games for students to play to reinforce and refresh their learning about school safety and disaster risk reduction. When the District head, Nico Biringkanae, visited the exhibition and he showed special interest in one school’s evacuation maps as well as the hand-washing guidance, which we observed and then demonstrated himself! Mr. Biringkanae ended his visit saying, “I am sure this project had helped students and their teachers learned a lot, and I hope that CWS will continue supporting efforts to improve school and community disaster response readiness in Tana Toraja.
