In recent years CWS has educated and supported a number of Timor Leste’s national army (F-FDTL) personnel in HIV testing and counseling (HTC) work; and now the F-FDTL has established an HTC center at the Metinaro training base near Dili, the country’s capital.
Dr. Paul Dos Santos is a doctor at the base and a HIV prevention facilitator who, with 14 other F-FDTL doctors and nurses, recently joined a 3-day workshop hosted by CWS and Marie Stopes International (MSI) to learn more about diagnosing and treating other sexually transmitted infections (STI). “The training was wonderful as it will help us provide better services in our main clinic and at field posts during staff rotations,” Dr. Dos Santos said. “During these days I learned a lot about STI management. The MSI staff gave us a lot of information as well as case studies, and we also had a chance to practice using our new knowledge at their clinic, which I found exciting. STI incidence is, sadly, quite high in our country, so this workshop was extremely useful for me and my colleagues,” he added.
