Because of the CWS-AmeriCares partnership to introduce the basics of public health issues into our disaster risk reduction (DRR) initiative in Myanmar, a young girl, Kayin, from Pathein Township in the Ayerwaddy delta is on the road to recovery from a number of side effects of tuberculosis. In the community-based DRR+ project, CWS has a number of health volunteers in place and, when Kayin’s parents called on one of them to help them understand her symptoms, he referred them to the hospital for a diagnosis of was sure was TB. With confirmation, Kayin was able to start treatment immediately, and when our colleague Nang Noom Kham visited her in April, Kayin’s health had improved a lot: her appetite was back, so she is gaining weight; she was sleeping well again and, best of all, she was back to her studies.
