Recently, SOLIDARITAS project teams in Tana Toraja and West Timor joined three events for the National Day for Disaster Preparedness organized nationwide by Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). All three events, though quite different from each other, highlighted progress through the project, which is funded by the Australian government through ACT Alliance member, Act for Peace.
In North Toraja District CWS team members were joined by colleagues from the District Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) team and a local NGO partner, INANTA, to share information with other government officials by facilitating a well-attended discussion about disaster response management in the District. In Tana Toraja District CWS staff joined an event organized by local government for 1,000-plus participants, including people from several SOLIDARITAS villages. Also at the gathering, BPBD Tana Toraja team members demonstrated some of their project-supported learning, including water rescue and emergency tent set-up. Finally, in Timor Tengah Selatan District in West Timor staff from CWS and local partner Gerbang Mas hosted a radio talk show on National Day for Disaster Preparedness during which members of the CWS-supported district DRR Forum, staff from the BPBD plus staff from local NGOs discussed disaster management issues and innovations through SOLITARITAS as well as Government efforts.
