In support of the 200+ asylum-seeking and refugee children CWS hosts in Jakarta, PURE Program Manager Andi Juanda recently joined an EU-funded / UNHCR-organized Alternatives to Detention Learning Program, which convened program experts from the UNHCR and a variety of organizations involved in campaigning and advocating for alternatives to detention for children; and, like CWS, in managing programs for the same aim.
Andi was invited to talk about CWS alternatives to detention for children in Jakarta: group homes, foster care with refugee families and semi-independent living. CWS successes and challenges were well-understood by others, especially colleagues from the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute, Save the Children Indonesia, Catholic Relief Services and the Indonesian Red Cross, who appreciated CWS work with which they are familiar from years of partnering in Jakarta.
