Young Lykha, 33, lives with his wife and child in Sra Aem Khang Chheung village in Preah Vihear province, northern Cambodia. Lykha earns a small income by rice farming and raising pigs with his family. When he was selected to be a Village Livestock Agent in 2005, Lykha gained knowledge and skills about best practice techniques for animal-raising – especially cattle and poultry treatment, including vaccination.
Recently, Lykha joined a CWS-organized refresher session on basic veterinary skill, where he was please to get some new information about proper shelter and cage maintenance, water management and feeding, plus virus protection and vaccinations. Reflecting on the lessons he learned, Lykha decided he would need to expand his knowledge to serve and satisfy his customers better. And, after the workshop, he decided to rent a small shop to provide veterinary services in Sra Aem Khang Chheung; and, in just a few months, his service is thriving and he has treated cows and pigs as well as dogs – and even a bear! Lykha has plans to expand his veterinary care business and said he is grateful to CWS for the opportunity to update and expand his knowledge so he can help others in his village while also bettering his own family’s life.
