As the nation, its Asian neighbors and democracy fighters worldwide watch hopefully for changes in Myanmar following recent transformational elections, CWS continues a slow, deliberate partnership with our funder, the Japan Platform (JPF) and community partners to help them improve their lives. By supporting communities to organize Water Committees and to build gravity-flow water supply systems in villages in southeast Kayin State, the CWS team is helping accelerate post-conflict resettling in villages that were initially rebuilt about 10 years ago. Regular monitoring meetings with Committee members and leaders show that families are benefiting by having their daily water-collection trek reduced from as much as half-mile or more to as few as 50 to 500 feet. Monitoring also shows essentially high quality construction, and the enthusiasm of Committee members, and others, to maintain and expand the systems.
