In Vietnam, as CWS and our partners build on the past 5 years’ successes from the Newly Integrated Development and Essential Action (New IDEA) initiative, women are leading more than ever to expand reach and results. A growing role for Women’s Union members, alongside newly energized Youth Union members, is for awareness-raising and community mobilization. Volunteers from both groups are engaging people to learn more about issues ranging from child protection, including anti-human trafficking, to environmental sanitation and clean water, including plastics reuse and biosand water filter building.
To help ensure their success, the women and young people who wanted to be community leaders for New IDEA first came together, with CWS team members, to improve their knowledge of the issues about which they are raising awareness. They also took the time together to practice engaging, positive communication skills and become capable community motivators, peer educators and resources to each other.
New IDEA has been possible because of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) generosity during the past 5 years, and the project was recently assessed by a team of external evaluators have measurable and growing impact for ethnic minority communities in northern Vietnam. As such, New IDEA will continue in 2020 with communities in Than Uyen district (Lai Chau province) and Chiem Hoa district (Tuyen Quang province) of Vietnam with added focus on gender justice and human trafficking prevention to keep raising awareness about child rights, including the right to protection from all forms of harm.
