Sergeant Sipriano Maia is among the first of a new generation of the Timor Leste defense forces’ (F-FDTL) HIV education and prevention activities facilitators. He joined the military in 2009 and has attended many health information sessions through the years. Based on his strong knowledge of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI) causes, prevention and care as well as his knowledge of reproductive health, Sergeant Maia was chosen to join a facilitator training program led by the new F-FDTL Master Trainers, who achieved their Master Trainer status with CWS support.

Sergeant Maia soon had his own experience as an HIV prevention educator when he traveled with the CWS team to districts outside his base to put his new skills to use in sharing information and knowledge he has long held. “I feel very happy that I can teach my peers in the outlying military posts about HIV and other STI prevention as well as HIV testing and counseling. I am also sharing what I know with my family and my neighbors”, said Sergeant Maia, who is a real asset to the F-FDTL / CWS team.
