Dr. Fransisco da Costa is one of two doctors assigned to the Timor-Leste army (F-FDTL) small naval unit in Hera, which is a town about 30 minutes outside Timor-Leste’s capital city, Dili. Both doctors recently joined CWS-supported workshops about HIV counseling and testing (HCT) as well as diagnosing and treating other sexually transmitted infections (STI). Soon after Dr. da Costa completed his training, the CWS team was very pleased join him as he led two HIV prevention information sessions for 42 sailors at the Hera base. Dr. da Costa graduated from medical school in Cuba and was assigned to the Navy on his return to Timor-Leste in 2010. “I have known about CWS support for HIV prevention in our armed forces since I got back from Cuba, and I’m happy that I now have had the opportunity to attend several educational workshops supported by CWS. I particularly liked the HIV testing training, and all that I learned about the infection, so I can now help my Navy colleagues get correct information about HIV transmission and prevention, and to know their status. The information sessions I led this month were my first experience as a facilitator of peer teaching-learning, and also my first time to do the HIV testing. Because of CWS support and encouragement, I feel now I’m ready to share HIV prevention and testing information and to do counseling here at the clinic in Hera, or wherever the Navy assigns me!”
